weirdschoolbus.com McKenna Bishop McKenna Bishop grew up in a rural village in Michigan. In 2011, she graduated from College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. 2011- 2016 she worked in a car manufacturing plant. In 2016, she had her daughter, who helped start the career path to teaching art. In 2019, she finished her teacher certification at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan.For the past two years, Bishop found a new discovery of play with a sewing machine and slip casting ceramics. She grew up on a small horse farm in Connecticut and works as a residential faculty member at a private high school in Massachusetts. She was formally trained as a painter and sculptor. She gravitates toward traditional techniques, as well as experimentation with alternative mediums and processes. In her work, she engages with the senses to talk about bodily awareness and the benefits of being connected to one’s body. Rejuvenation: Through her work, Doolan sheds light on the current global pandemic of malaise caused by job burnout and a lack of a cultural emphasis on happiness. Facing these struggles, Doolan creates healing artwork for herself and others. Doolan’s work harnesses the emotional power of art objects to serve as rejuvenation devices. Doolan makes mixed media instructional aids that show how to regulate and optimize the flow of energy in one’s body. She is the board president of Yarmouth Arts Alliance, a non-profit organization bringing the community together through the arts. Marlena graduated from Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT, in 1992 and earned a Certificate in Graphic Design from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA, in 1998. After working as a graphic designer for several years, she stepped away from the computer and started to paint. Marlena lives in Maine with her husband, where they raised two children. She is an avid open-water swimmer and supporter of local environmental groups. Landscape Body: An expanded field of landscape painting with a mix of materials and processes to reconnect humanity with nature and self with one's local place is vital to our well-being and the health of our environment. Landscape painting in forms and processes that bind our bodies with nature from the microscopic to the grand reflects scientific research that breaks down barriers between fields of biological sciences and reveals the complicated web between humans and other living and non-living things. Discoveries in psychology and the new field of Neuroaesthetics confirm art and landscape painting's vital role in our well-being. These discoveries show that being in nature as well as looking at a landscape painting or object of inspired beauty reduces anxiety and depression by producing the sensation of awe–profound and unexplainable feelings, and can move people to make decisions that promote survival and affect one's happiness. She comes from a family of scientists which has influenced her love of the natural world and fascination with how things work.Sunset Seeking: Psychedelic Color and Light in the Landscape: My work locates the natural world as a realm of possibility: a source of transformative encounters that generate feeling and awe, positioning the magical within the observable. A psychedelic experience of prismatic light and spectral color, similar to the light and color of a sunset, creates feelings of awe. In my current paintings and ceramics, I am focusing on creating a sense of glowing color and shimmering light, similar to the many hues of a sunset or light reflected off the surface of the ocean. Like the atmosphere reflecting and refracting light during the sunset, I seek to create work that visually mimics a prism — breaking light into all its reflected colors. An experience of oscillating color as light and light as color is psychedelic and recalls the awe and aesthetics of sixties psychedelia. Developing a psychedelic use of prismatic light and spectral, ‘rainbow’ coloring is my visual strategy to give form to feelings of awe within a painted landscape or figurative natural subject. They received their BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Craft/Material Studies and attended the Krenov School of Fine Woodworking for two years. From benches to vases, Hinkley combines traditional craft techniques with wonky forms to draw connections between the body—particularly the queer body—and its environment. They currently live as joyfully as possible in Chico, California with their partner.No Good Place: Utopia is all around us, here and now, not as a place, but as an experience. It exists wherever feelings of absolute satisfaction are given space in everyday life, marked by a sense of alignment between a person and their holistic environment. Practices of art, craft, and design–or ACD—particularly within alternative or subcultural communities, show the reality of everyday utopia when free and open-minded pursuits of desire forge connections between personal pleasure and communal good. This view is antithetical to the common definition of utopia, imagined as an island, a foreign country, or even another planet, but always as a microcosm of perfection. This pessimistic and limiting interpretation is a carrot of hope to reach for while trudging through the muck of reality, but it undermines the power and relevance of utopia in everyday life. Jacome works with sustainably sourced materials that are found, gifted, or foraged within her environment and makes her own paints, inks, and dyes from quarry stones, freshly picked wildflowers, and kitchen remnants. Living with chronic pain and illness has provided Jacome with a sensitivity to the world and a recognition of its interconnectedness, the depth of its suffering, and gratitude for moments of slowness. Following her graduation in May of 2023 she looks forward to becoming Continuing Studies faculty at MECA&amp;D and finishing the building of her tiny house on wheels with her fiancé.Contemplative Presence Made Material: It is an illusion of humanity’s own invention that there exists a duality, a separation between oneself and nature. This illusion of separation has allowed the landscape to endure destructive and abusive extraction of its resources at a pace which has led to a global environmental crisis. Contemplative Presence Made Material argues that it is through the act of contemplative presence driven by empathic curiosity, reverential engagement with materials, and the noticing and valuing of small moments that the illusion of this separation fades away and is replaced with the clarity of interconnectedness. This series of interdisciplinary paintings intertwine paint and textiles with mindful engagement of material resources, predominantly forged pigments (ochres) and dyes, from compost and wildflowers, as well as resources from throughout her community. This work provides the audience with the space to slow down and appreciate what often goes unnoticed in fast-paced contemporary life through depicting everyday encounters. Amidst an ever-present global ecological crisis, this work is a gentle invitation for quiet and contemplative activism, inviting viewers to take a moment to be present in their direct environment and listen to what this earthen connection reveals. Her favorite sound is the deep, quiet void of a nighttime snowfall. Her favorite smell is the piquant earthiness of desert creosote after a rain shower. She is a Libra-Cancer-Cancer. ...spontaneously, by the action of light...: We long to see, we love to see, and we want to believe. The desire to see the depths of a black hole, to see the morning fog evaporating off of river rocks, to see any image at all, are one in the same, just achieved through different means. Beyond that, we want to record these things, to revisit them, to prove their existence, to exact an emotion by way of image. While some are benefited by the indexical nature of photography, there are some that defy representation. Yet, we will keep trying anyway.
