CJPM’s work investigates the performative nature of the self and the formation of identity through iterative citation of cultural sources. They frequently invoke ancient queer histories and deities, symbols of resilient Others, and plant motifs to articulate their sense of the queer divine. Ginkgo Cloak is made of hand crafted steel ginkgo leaves joined with cold forged rivets creating a protective garment. Ginkgo Cloak rests on the waist of Ea-Na Armor, a garment made of steel ginkgo and beech leaves and woven chain, used in the ritual invocation of an old god. Emanating from within the garments, Labor Song overlays the artist’s voice with the sound of hammer on steel, speaking to the repetitious labor of creation.

The MFA Thesis Exhibitions for the Class of 2023 are interdisciplinary shows that incorporate a range of making practices unified by the overwhelming concerns these students have for their environment, their communities, their families, and their own well-being. With an emphasis on the personal, and at times the anecdotal, these 21 artists make a variety of contributions in the form of ceramics, garments, furniture, installations, paintings, photographs, poems, prints, sculptures, and videos. The nature of their work and research demonstrates the caliber and cultural relevance of our program.
